Well, I can’t ignore the fact it’s Valentine’s Day.
In fact, I’m way too much of a hopeless romantic to ever think of doing such a thing.
So, let’s give all this love I have inside some direction and talk about the flames I fan for this hobby.
Instead of just creating a list of cards I love (kinda boring, I know, and done one-million times before, I’m sure), I’m going to answer some romantic, Valentine’s Day/love-themed questions.
Don’t be shy about answering these questions in the chat! It could be fun!
First Love? 1984 Topps Don Mattingly — it was the first card I actually chased, and I still love it today.
The one that broke my heart? 2012 Topps Chrome Andrew Luck RC — I loved Luck like few others, and I spent a lot of money expressing that love. Then, well… you know.
The one that got away? 1984 Fleer Michael Jordan — At one time, back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when my brother and I were setting up at regional show after regional show, we likely had a dozen or more of these cards at any point and time. We probably sold them for around $200 on average I’m guessing off the top of my head. If I just would have held onto a few of those… oh, well.
My true love? 1974 Topps Lanny McDonald RC — Yep, it’s a weird one, but it’s true. McDonald is my favorite player regardless of sport, and his card is one of the few I will never part with. Long story behind it, but basically McDonald did something super nice for me when I was a little kid at a Red Wings game. I’ve never forgotten it. Plus, he has the best mustache in the history of professional sports.
Dream date? 1993 Upper Deck SP Foil Derek Jeter — When I say I loved this card back in the day, I REALLY loved this card. In fact, I was obsessed with it back in mid-90s. It’s a cool looking card of a cool player. Like a dream date, I just want to show it off! I still love it, but I do not own a single one of them today. May have to change that real soon though.
One night stand? Without question it’s any and all superfractors. Period. I have owned but a few of these and I love them, crazy love them. And I know most fizzle out or are worth little after a little time passes. Nonetheless, having one of these is a really good time for a really short time in most cases.
My grow old with? 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky — It’s reliable, timeless and will never go out of style. That’s the kind of love I want as I grow old.
Happy Valentine’s Day all!
